Pyroclast Rare Cuttlepluff

Description

Here is a species of cuttlepluff that was just discovered this past August. Pyroclasts, if any exist beyond this specimen, are thought to be created by the specific circumstance of a pyroclastic flow meeting with a body of water beneath a summer's full moon, thus their rarity. They do not seem to exhibit the usual speed of a cuttlepluff and instead travel extremely slowly. An unsettling rise and fall of a buzzing sound combined with the sound of crashing waves or some sort of static can be heard as they move.

Oddly, this one did not seem to have eyes when first discovered, instead bearing two patches of charcoal where eyes should be on other species. However once seeming to become fond of one of my fellow explorers, the specimen when next observed had eyes that could only be described as windows through which one could observe a specific part of the night sky regardless of time of day.

Further observations revealed that other cuttlepluffs avoid this specimen. Locations it travels through are devoid of all cuttlepluffs known to frequent such areas. Once the pyroclast has gone, the cuttlepluffs can be seen slowly emerging from various hiding places or descending from high altitudes to rejoin the hiding community before activity returns to normal. What exactly are we studying, or is it studying us?

I'd locked all the hatches and doors of the boat tonight and went down to brush my teeth in our tiny, makeshift bathroom. In the middle of my frothy work, there was that noise, almost deafening, like a hive of bees over a crashing shoreline. And there in the mirror it was hovering behind me, just over my shoulder. It had my toothbrush. In my hand where a brush had been was a dead crab.

The Making-of Details: the result of finding a cool piece of fabric in the store, an even cooler pillow, knowing a birthday was upcoming, and getting to work to make it happen. There are two secret messages hidden under each cheek fin, embroidered. The embroidery was of course done professionally after I finished designing it, because I'm not insane much and was on a tight schedule. The mane, tail and fins were inSANE to sew together. So much broken thread and tangles undone to get past all the excess abrasive fabric inside. This thing would be impossible on a machine. I had no idea what I was tasking myself with, but it came out so awesome that it was so so worth it. Finally, those eyes. MAN I had an idea that I really didn't have time for with the due date! So worth it tho. They're magnetic! I wanted to make it like the original concept explained below, but I felt it would mean so much more with an awesome set of eyes like the stars. Each has the same constellation. They're painted with iridescent acrylic and backed with metal plates.

Silly Origin Story: So I had the body and mane of one cuttlepluff-to-be all sewn together. My husband, being the puppeteer madman that he is, thought it'd be funny to take a black glove, shove it where the head would be one day and make it like a zombie soul-hungry thing that made the above freaky sounds. It had no eyes. Somehow he made it "stare" at me around corners, appear floating behind me late at night and just generally freak me the hell out with its approaching sounds off somewhere in the house. Ya it's stupid, but I let it freak me out and it was fun. I took a photo cuz it kept coming back so much that it became its own living thing. I had no idea I'd eventually make a real one. I still have that photo. ~shudder~
